WWII Imperial Japanese Navy Mizuho Aircraft Carrier Launch Commemorative Lacquer

  
This is an extremely rare commemorative item from the launch of the Imperial Japanese Navy aircraft carrier Mizuho, produced in 1938 (Showa 13) at the Kawasaki Shipyard. (Commemorating the launch of Seaplane Carrier Mizuho - Kawasaki Shipyard). The beautifully lacquered red box features Mt. Fuji, clouds, and cherry blossoms-classic motifs of patriotic symbolism in prewar Japan. The Mizuho was a hybrid seaplane tender and torpedo boat carrier-one of only a few of its kind. She participated in early WWII operations, including actions in the South Pacific and Indian Ocean, before being sunk by the USS Drum in May 1942. Originally not for sale, such commemorative pieces were given to select individuals connected with the shipyard or the vessel. This large, high-quality lacquerware sweet container is a rare surviving artifact from the vanished world of the Imperial Japanese Navy. Condition: Minor chips and wear (see photos).
