These lanterns were deployed by the Imperial Japanese Army for tactical field communication-particularly in environments where radio use was limited or dangerous. The lamp's structure includes a manual shutter, enabling Morse code signaling using intermittent light flashes. Variants like this were used from the 1930s through the Pacific War, seen in photographic documentation from campaigns in China, Southeast Asia, and island operations. Most of these lanterns were lost, scrapped, or repurposed after the war. Surviving examples with their original wooden boxes are particularly hard to find today, making this a valuable artifact for military history collectors and researchers.Age-consistent scratches, corrosion, soot, and wear present. Painted exterior largely intact, some chipping.
Storage box shows rusting on latches but remains structurally sound. For display or reference only - no guarantee of function. Lantern: H 50cm × W 16.5cm × D 18cm. A compelling piece of Imperial Japanese Army communication equipment-ideal for collectors of WW2 gear, Japanese militaria, or signal corps history. International Buyers - Please Note.
