Extremely rare WW2 Imperial Japanese Army photo album from the China Campaign, compiled by soldiers of the Ushijima Unit. The album was issued in 1939 (Showa 14), commemorating the deployment of the unit during the Second Sino-Japanese War. The "Ushijima Unit" almost certainly refers to the regiment led by Colonel Mitsuru Ushijima-later infamous for commanding the 32nd Army in the Battle of Okinawa and ultimately committing ritual suicide in June 1945.
At the time of this album, Ushijima was a respected field commander, leading engagements in Shanghai and the Chinese interior. Inside are multiple pages of rare real photos showing. Ruins of cities and bridges (likely Shanghai-Nanking area). Army engineers constructing military infrastructure.
Troop marches and battle scenes. Civilian scenes and local conditions.
Emotional send-offs and patriotic parades in Japan. The front cover reads "War Commemoration - Ushijima Unit - Volume 1", with a cherry blossom motif and military helmet. A beautiful yet solemn artifact. This album is not a reprint.
It is an original issue from 1939 with signs of age, wear, and fading. A rare opportunity to own a visual record from the earliest phase of Japan's total war mobilization in China-connected to one of the most fateful generals of the entire Pacific War. Own a Piece of History.
