Vintage WWII Japanese Imperial Army Distance Box Range Scope Survey Ammo

  
For your consideration is this vintage "Distance Box" used during WWII by the Japanese Imperial Army. This is an item from our personal collection we received from a family friend. The family friend served as a US Marine in the Pacific during WWII and passed away during the 1980s. Bowen and was from Leeds, Alabama (for prominence purposes). According to Google Translate, the text on the top reads "Distance Box".

I'm uncertain if this was for a scope, ammo, or survey equipment originally. The box is constructed of wood with a metal frame.

Since this was exposed to the elements during the war, there is a bit of surface rust... But the metal is still quite strong and intact. It has a very unique lock that I've never seen before. The box measures 10 inches long x 7 inches wide x 4.4 inches tall. This is a unique and awesome find and quite rare.
