Written using Sumi-e ink-charcoal on washi paper. Contains written explanatory comments (kotobagaki) and are designed to be viewed in sequence when unrolled from right to left. The handscroll made its appearance very early in East Asian pictorial art. Narrative handscrolls and this is a WWII item found in a straw basket with flags pictures and pension documents and others. The writing reflects the tastes of the soldier on various topics from the warrior (samurai) class, the sword, love for coountry etc. I do not have enough time to sit down and sompletely decipher this one but.
