There are buttons missing however. The Type 98 designation is indicated in the interior ink stamping at the very top just under. The top two characters are "9" and "8". The next block of characters (three columns wide) indicates the manufacture as being. "Showa 14 Year" or 1939 in the middle column. One characteristic of the Type 98 versus the later Type 3 (from 1944) is the lower rear. Whereas the Type 98 has two buttons facing towards the outside, the Type 3 has only one. There are two button holes on the lower front closure corners which I believe are for.

Attachment to two waist buttons (missing on this example) on each side of the rear and are. To hold the lower front open, but the exact reason for this method of wear. There are no tears, severe stains, or any noticeable wear.
