This is a late WW2 Japanese Army Officer sword. I was told that the tang states that this shin-gunto katana dates back to June 1945. I've shown this swords to a number of other Japanese collectors and everyone agrees that this is a legit piece. The tang of this sword is drilled for 2 holes but the handle has only 1.
I obtained this sword from a family in the USA, but they did not know the history of the piece other than someone served in WW2. This is a nice sword but I have another of the same with a slightly different style of wrap used on the hilt, I don't need two of the same model. I think there is a chance that during WW2 that the scabbard paint was touched up, which might also explain the excellence condition of the handle wrap. I wasn't around in 1945, so I cannot tell you this swords history, other than it is NOT a reproduction. This sword is ready to display.
