This military tray was made by the Japanese Army during World War II. It has the name of an infantryman on the back, so I believe it is a commemorative gift given to an infantryman.

It is reinforced with a naturally occurring lacquer called urushi, which is unique to Japan, and waterproofing has been added, making it very durable. Height 22.9, width 22.9, height 2.4 cm.
