Sterling silver insignia of the infamous kempeitai of the Japanese Army during World War II. On the front is the rising sun with M. On the reverse side is engraved "Sterling Silver" in prewar notation from right to left. Kempeitai had special power as the military police, and abused that power, behaving arrogantly towards enemy forces and even their own troops.

After the war, members of the Kempeitai, fearing that they would be judged by the Allies, destroyed various evidence because they would be severely punished if it was discovered that they had been members of the Kempeitai.
